Mahuiling Air Base (马回岭 Jiujiang Lushan Airport)

Mahuiling Air Base is located near Jiujiang in Jiangxi Province, China. Construction began in July 1971 with state investment, and the facility was completed and entered use in November 1983 as a military airfield known as Lushan Airport.

Civil operations were added to the military installation in the mid-1980s. The inaugural civil flight operated on 19 July 1985 to Huizhou, Guangdong, followed on 19 June 1986 by a round-trip Beijing–Jiujiang–Huizhou route. The airfield was renamed Jiujiang Airport on 4 January 1988, and a Nanjing–Shanghai–Jiujiang round-trip route opened in May 1990.

On 18 June 1996 the airfield was formally converted into a joint military-civilian airport, with the civil aviation designation Jiujiang Lushan Airport (IATA: JIU, ICAO: ZSJJ). Civil operations proved intermittent. The civil terminal closed in October 1999 due to low passenger traffic, reopened in August 2002 under a lease agreement, and closed again on 11 October 2002. In December 2004 the Jiujiang Municipal Government transferred civil operations to Jiangxi Airport Group Corporation. Following renovation, civil service resumed on 7 July 2006, halted on 28 July, and resumed on 7 December 2006.

Civil flights were suspended on 21 March 2015 for a complete reconstruction programme. The Jiujiang government confirmed the renovation and reopening plan in April 2016, and in May 2016 the Civil Aviation Administration of China revoked the operating licence for Jiujiang Lushan Airport. The quality improvement project was substantially complete in September 2021, and with the operating permit restored, commercial flights resumed on 31 October 2021.

The base retains a single runway. Following reconstruction, the civil side comprises an apron of approximately 20,000 square metres with three parking stands, rated as a 4C flight zone capable of handling narrow-body airliners of the Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320 classes.
