Description
Naval Air Station Kingsville is located three miles east of Kingsville, Texas, and is operated by the United States Navy under the jurisdiction of Navy Region Southeast. Commissioned on July 4, 1942, as Naval Auxiliary Air Station Kingsville, the base initially functioned as an auxiliary field for Naval Air Station Corpus Christi during World War II. It was re-commissioned in 1951 to support requirements for the Korean War, with jet training classes beginning in July of that year. The facility was redesignated as a Naval Air Station in 1968.
The primary mission of the station is the flight training of Student Naval Aviators for the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps, along with tactical jet training for NATO and Allied partner nations. It serves as the headquarters for Training Air Wing Two, which comprises Training Squadron 21 (VT-21) and Training Squadron 22 (VT-22). Other stationed units include the United States Army Reserve 812th Quartermaster Company, a NATRACOM Detachment, and the Naval Branch Health Clinic Kingsville. The base population consists of Navy and Marine Corps officers, enlisted personnel, Department of Defense civilians, and contract maintenance staff.
Training Air Wing Two operates the Boeing T-45 Goshawk, specifically utilizing the T-45C variant equipped with digital cockpits. Infrastructure at the installation includes an air terminal, firing ranges, aerial targets, and bombing ranges. The station also manages Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Orange Grove, which serves as a satellite airfield. The operations department provides air traffic control, firefighting and rescue services, and manages the storage and maintenance of ordnance and munitions.
