Description

Nörvenich Air Base, designated as Fliegerhorst Nörvenich and historically as Advanced Landing Ground Y-58, is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Established in 1952 for RAF Germany, the facility opened in August 1954. In 1958, Jagdbombergeschwader 31 (JaBoG 31) became the first German fighter-bomber wing to operate from the site, utilizing the Republic F-84F Thunderstreak. In January 1959, this unit became the first German Air Force wing assigned to NATO.

The base has hosted several aircraft generations. Following the F-84F, the wing transitioned to the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter in 1961. Operations with the Panavia PA 200 Tornado commenced in July 1983. Since June 2010, the resident Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 31 "Boelcke" has operated Eurofighter Typhoons.

Exercise history at the installation includes Coronet Poker in August 1977, during which 18 F-105 aircraft from the United States Air Force Reserve deployed to the base. In August 2020, the base hosted Exercise Blue Wings 2020, involving six Israeli Air Force F-16C/D "Barak" fighters. This event marked the first time Israeli combat aircraft operated from a German airfield.

As of 2023, Tactical Air Force Wing 33 relocated its flight operations to Nörvenich from Büchel Air Base. This deployment supports continued operations while the Büchel airfield undergoes infrastructure renovations to accommodate F-35 aircraft scheduled for arrival by 2026.
