Description
Pisa Air Base, also known as Pisa-San Giusto, is a dual-use facility in Tuscany, Italy. The installation was established on February 15, 1940, as the 46° Stormo da Bombardamento Terrestre and was initially equipped with Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79 aircraft. The unit relocated from Centocelle to Pisa in 1953, transitioning to Fairchild C-119 aircraft. It was redesignated as the 46ª Aerobrigata Trasporti Medi in 1954 and commenced international airlift operations in 1956. The unit adopted its current name, 46ª Brigata Aerea, on November 1, 1985.
The Italian Air Force operates the base as the location for the 46ª Brigata Aerea "Silvio Angelucci," the service's primary transport and airlift unit. The brigade is organized into three flight groups: the 2° Gruppo and 50° Gruppo, which operate C-130J and C-130J-30 aircraft, and the 98° Gruppo, which operates C-27J Spartan tactical transports. The base also hosts KC-130J tanker variants for aerial refueling. Operations include airlift support for military deployments, humanitarian missions, and biocontaminant medical evacuation.
The military infrastructure is situated on the southern portion of the airfield. The base shares its runway and general infrastructure with Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei).
