Description
Grosseto Air Base is located in central Italy, three kilometers west of the city center of Grosseto in the Tuscany region. During the Second World War, the installation, then designated Grosetta Main, supported operations by the United States Army Air Forces' Twelfth Air Force. The 86th Fighter Group and 57th Fighter Group operated P-47 Thunderbolts from the field between 1944 and 1945. The 47th Bomb Group also utilized the base during this period, flying A-20 and A-26 attack aircraft for night missions.
Infrastructure expansion and modernization occurred during the 1950s, leading to the resumption of military activities. In 1959, the 4th Wing relocated its headquarters to the base, followed by the activation of the 9th Fighter Group on June 1, 1961.
The facility is currently operated by the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare) and is designated as a joint-use airport, accommodating both military units and civilian charter or private aviation. It is the primary station for the 4th Stormo, which operates squadrons of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. The base infrastructure supports these multi-role fighter operations alongside its civilian aviation functions.
