Description
Rabat-Salé Airport is a joint-use public and military facility located in Salé, Morocco, eight kilometers east-northeast of Rabat and 90 kilometers northeast of Casablanca. The installation hosts the First Air Base of the Royal Moroccan Air Force.
During World War II, the airfield was utilized by the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces. The 319th Bombardment Group operated Martin B-26 Marauders from the site between 25 April and 1 June 1943. Following the departure of American combat units in mid-1943, Air Transport Command used the facility as a stopover on the Casablanca-Algiers transport route. Control transferred to civil authorities at the end of the war. During the early Cold War, the United States Air Force's Strategic Air Command established the headquarters for its 5th and 316th Air Divisions at the installation. The command operated B-47 Stratojets and KC-97 Stratofreighters from the airfield until the United States Air Force withdrew from Morocco in 1957.
The airport infrastructure includes a 1,360-square-meter freight terminal and an 84,000-square-meter apron with four jetways and 10 aircraft stands. The stands accommodate Boeing 747, Boeing 737, Airbus A310, and Airbus A320 aircraft. The facility holds an ILS Class 1 certification and provides VOR, DME, and NDB radionavigational aids.
