Description
The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is a planned Indian single-seat, twin-engine, fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter being developed for the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and private industry to build it. Launched in 2010 as successor to the earlier Medium Combat Aircraft study, the 25-tonne-class fighter is intended to supplant the Su-30MKI and perform air supremacy, ground-strike, SEAD and electronic warfare missions. Design work was completed in 2023, and India's Cabinet Committee on Security approved a US$1.6 billion prototype development project in March 2024.
Design
The AMCA features shoulder-mounted diamond-shaped trapezoidal wings, a diverterless supersonic inlet with serpentine ducts, an internal weapons bay, and an airframe optimised for low radar cross-section and supercruise. Published specifications - a length of 18 m, maximum takeoff weight of 27,000 kg, Mach 1.8 top speed and 3,240 km range - are projected figures for a design that has not yet flown. The initial Mark 1 will be powered by two General Electric F414 turbofans produced in India, while a more powerful 120 kN-class engine for the Mark 2 is to be co-developed with France's Safran under a programme announced in August 2025.
A full-scale engineering model was shown at Aero India 2025. Following an industry-partnership execution model approved in May 2025, three consortia led by Tata Advanced Systems, Larsen & Toubro-BEL and Bharat Forge were shortlisted in February 2026, and a request for proposal for five prototypes was issued on 27 May 2026. The first flight is targeted around 2029-30, with induction planned for about 2034; the IAF plans roughly seven squadrons (~126 aircraft).
