Description
The Garpiya is a family of Russian long-range combat drones produced by IEMZ Kupol, a subsidiary of Almaz-Antey, for use in the Russo-Ukrainian War. The drone incorporates engines, parts, and technology sourced from China, and is assembled in Russia. IEMZ Kupol established a factory in China to produce components and kits for export to Russia, while the primary Russian manufacturing facility operates in Izhevsk at a former concrete plant acquired in 2020. Production figures reached 500 drones in the second half of 2023 and 2,000 drones in the first half of 2024.
In terms of design, the Garpiya is similar to the HESA Shahed 136. It is powered by a Limbach L550E engine supplied by Xiamen Limbach.
Public reporting on the drone's production and operational use first emerged in 2024. The Garpiya-A1 has been used in the Russo-Ukrainian War against civilian and military targets, with approximately 500 Garpiya variants deployed per month in Ukraine by 2025. Outside of Ukraine, the Russian Africa Corps deployed the Garpiya-A1 during the Mali War, with the wreckage of a KK variant identified near Sévaré in May 2026.
