Description
The Jasoos (Urdu: جاسوس, "spy") is an unmanned aerial vehicle designed and manufactured by SATUMA of Pakistan for reconnaissance and real-time situational awareness. The Jasoos II Bravo+ variant entered Pakistan Air Force service in 2004 and serves as the service's principal UAV for operations and its UAV training programme.
Development
Jasoos II is believed to be derived from the AWC Bravo+, a design SATUMA adapted for Pakistani requirements. The Bravo+ variant was inducted into the Pakistan Air Force in 2004 and has remained in production for that customer. It was fielded as a system intended to be simple to operate and maintain, using conventional runway takeoff and landing under manual control.
Design
The Jasoos II is a piston-engined UAV with a length of 4.27 m, a wingspan of 4.92 m and a maximum takeoff weight of 175 kg. Power comes from a single two-cylinder, two-stroke gasoline engine rated at 28 kW (38 hp), giving a maximum speed of 130 km/h, a service ceiling of 3,048 m and an endurance of four to five hours. Operating range is 100 km, limited by the line-of-sight data-link used to control the aircraft from a ground control station. After takeoff the vehicle can fly autonomously on a pre-programmed navigation system, with mission control exercised over the data-link. Payload capacity is 15–25 kg, quoted elsewhere as up to 20 kg of controllable payloads. The standard configuration carries a steerable day/low-light camera pod that pans 360 degrees in azimuth and ±105 degrees in elevation, permitting panoramic viewing. Avionics comprise the electro-optical payload, a real-time data-link and the remote control and autonomous navigation system.
Operational History
Since its 2004 induction the Bravo+ has been used by the Pakistan Air Force for reconnaissance and situational awareness tasks, and as the primary type in its UAV operations and training programme. The system has been described by the manufacturer as reliable and undemanding in operation and maintenance. Production for the Pakistan Air Force has continued.
