Description
The Antonov An-196 Liutyi is a Ukrainian one-way attack unmanned aerial vehicle (OWA-UAV) developed by Ukroboronprom in October 2022. The system was designed as an analogue to the Shahed 136 one-way attack drone fielded by Russia. For payload, the UAV has been documented carrying an upgraded 75 kg warhead.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are the sole operator of the An-196, with missions conducted by units including the 1st Center of the Unmanned Systems Forces (formerly the 14th Regiment of Unmanned Aerial Systems). The Ukrainian military has deployed the Liutyi against oil refineries, industrial facilities, and military airfields inside Russian territory.
On 25 November 2024, a Liutyi configured with the 75 kg warhead struck a Russian oil refinery in Saratov at a range of more than 600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. On 5 July 2025, at least two UAVs targeted the VNIIR-Progress facility in Cheboksary, approximately 975 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, which manufactures military components for Su-34 fighter-bombers, S-300 air defense systems, T-90M and T-14 tanks, and submarines.
The Saratov refinery was struck again on 13 October 2025 by the 1st Battalion of the 14th Regiment. Following another strike on 31 October 2025, the UAV was used on 14 December 2025 to target a Lukoil-operated offshore oil platform in the Caspian Sea. In February 2026, a Liutyi struck the Lukoil oil refinery in Ukhta, Komi Republic, representing an operational range of approximately 1,700 kilometers. On 5 May 2026, two Liutyi drones were deployed alongside a Flamingo missile to strike the VNIIR-Progress plant in Cheboksary to target the production of electronic components for drone antenna and guidance systems.
