Description
The SOCATA TBM (now Daher TBM) is a French single-engine turboprop business and utility light aircraft manufactured by Daher. Originally developed as a joint venture between the American Mooney Airplane Company and French manufacturer SOCATA, the aircraft entered service in 1990. It is configured for up to six occupants and was the first high-performance single-engine passenger and cargo aircraft to enter series production.
Development
The program originated from the Mooney 301, a pressurized piston-powered prototype that first flew on 7 April 1983. Following Mooney's acquisition by French owners in 1985, SOCATA formed the TBM International joint venture with Mooney in June 1987 to develop a turboprop derivative designated the TBM 700. The TBM 700 prototype made its maiden flight on 14 July 1988, receiving French type certification in January 1990 and FAA certification in August 1990. Mooney withdrew from the joint venture in May 1991 due to financial shortfalls, leaving SOCATA as the sole program lead. By July 2023, a total of 1,155 TBM series aircraft had been produced.
Design
The TBM is a low-wing monoplane constructed primarily of aluminum and steel, featuring Nomex honeycomb tail surfaces and Fowler flaps covering 80 percent of the trailing edge. Power is provided by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A series turboprop engine driving a constant-speed propeller, with flat-rated power outputs ranging from 700 to 850 horsepower. Avionics suites integrated across different production runs include Garmin G1000, G3000, and G1000 NXi systems, supported by automated deicing, split-flap protection, and air data computers. An optional defense and security configuration adds underwing hardpoints for sensor pods, a retractable optronics turret, and synthetic aperture radar.
Operational History
Private owner-operators account for 90 percent of all TBM operations, alongside limited deployment in commercial charter services. Military operators include France, which maintained 15 aircraft in the French Air and Space Force and eight in French Army Light Aviation as of 2016. Aviation safety databases recorded 93 accidents and incidents involving TBM series aircraft between November 1991 and March 2024, resulting in 84 fatalities.
