Switzerland Army

The Swiss Land Forces operate under the Joint Operations Command within a militia-based military system supported by a professional core. Ground forces are organized into three mechanized formations—Mechanized Brigade 1, Mechanized Brigade 4, and Mechanized Brigade 11—alongside four regionally based territorial formations designated Territorial Division 1, Territorial Division 2, Territorial Division 3, and Territorial Division 4. Main military garrisons and training centers are situated at Thun, Frauenfeld, Bière, Chamblon, and Walenstadt. Specialized ground operational units fall under the Special Forces Command, which includes the Army Reconnaissance Detachment 10. Air transport and utility support for land operations, including transport by Super Puma, Cougar, and EC635 helicopters, are provided centrally by the Swiss Air Force.

Armored units operate Pz 87 main battle tanks, an upgraded variant of the Leopard 2A4. Mechanized infantry formations field Spz 2000 infantry fighting vehicles, derived from the CV9030CH platform. Infantry and support units rely on the MOWAG Piranha family of wheeled armored vehicles for personnel transport, command and control, reconnaissance, and anti-tank missions, supplemented by MOWAG Eagle and MOWAG Duro light armored vehicles. Indirect fire support is fielded by M109 KAWEST WE 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzers and 81mm mortars. Short-range air defense relies on FIM-92 Stinger shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles, with ground forces air surveillance integrating into mobile radar units.

The primary operational responsibilities of the Swiss Land Forces encompass territorial defense, protection of critical national infrastructure, and military support to civilian authorities for internal security and disaster relief. Due to Switzerland's policy of armed neutrality, the land forces have no modern combat experience. Overseas military activity is limited to peace-support missions, primarily the SWISSCOY contingent serving with the NATO-led Kosovo Force under a United Nations mandate, along with military observers assigned to UN monitoring missions.

Modernization programs focus on replacing legacy armored and artillery platforms. Under the Artillery Weapon Platform program, the military selected the KNDS Artillery Gun Module mounted on a 10x10 Piranha IV wheeled chassis to replace the M109 self-propelled howitzer fleet. Indirect fire capabilities are also being expanded through the deployment of Mortar 16, a 120mm mortar integrated onto 8x8 Piranha IV vehicles. Infantry units are transitioning anti-armor capabilities to RGW90 HH weapons. Air defense capability is being modernized through integration with medium-range IRIS-T SLM and long-range Patriot missile systems operated within the integrated air defense structure. To increase force survivability, the military is executing a logistics restructuring plan to decentralize equipment and ammunition storage into hardened underground bunker facilities.
