Overview
The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force operates under the Ministry of Defense, with operational command funneled through the JSDF Joint Operations Command and the Ground Component Command headquartered at Ichigaya in Tokyo. Land forces are administratively divided into five regional armies: the Northern Army stationed in Hokkaido, the Northeastern Army headquartered in Sendai, the Eastern Army headquartered at Camp Asaka, the Central Army headquartered at Camp Itami, and the Western Army headquartered at Camp Kengun. Operational formations include divisions, brigades, the 1st Airborne Brigade, the 1st Helicopter Brigade, and the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade headquartered at Camp Ainoura in Sasebo.
Armored units field Type 10 and Type 90 main battle tanks, supported by Type 16 Maneuver Combat Vehicles. Mechanized infantry units operate Type 89 infantry fighting vehicles, Type 96 armored personnel carriers, and Bushmaster protected mobility vehicles. Ground-based artillery units utilize Type 99 tracked self-propelled howitzers, Type 19 wheeled self-propelled howitzers, FH70 towed howitzers, and M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems. Air defense assets include Type 87 self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, Type 03 medium-range surface-to-air missile systems, Type 81 short-range surface-to-air missile systems, and Patriot PAC-3 surface-to-air missile batteries for ballistic missile defense. Army aviation operates AH-64D Apache and AH-1S Cobra attack helicopters, CH-47J Chinook transport helicopters, UH-2 utility helicopters, and V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.
Primary operational mandates center on national defense, territorial protection of remote islands, response to natural disasters, and international humanitarian assistance. Overseas deployment experience includes UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and logistic support operations in Djibouti. Operational deployment is governed by domestic legal frameworks and Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, restricting ground force activities to self-defense operations and statutory collective self-defense scenarios.
Modernization initiatives emphasize rapid-deployment formations and island defense capabilities. To replace the legacy Type 96 fleet, procurement includes Patria AMV XP 8x8 armored personnel carriers produced through licensing agreements with local industry. Domestic production includes the Type 24 Common Tactical Wheeled Vehicle family, which utilizes the Type 16 chassis to produce infantry combat, mortar, and reconnaissance variants. Artillery programs focus on fielding the Type 19 wheeled howitzer, while standoff strike capabilities are expanding through upgrades to the Type 12 surface-to-ship missile system and the acquisition of long-range land-attack missiles.
