Kenya Army

The Kenya Army, the ground component of the Kenya Defence Forces, is headquartered in Nairobi under the leadership of the Commander of the Kenya Army. Operational formations include the 2nd Infantry Brigade based at Kahawa Garrison in Nairobi, the 4th Infantry Brigade at Lanet Barracks in Nakuru, the 6th Infantry Brigade at Modika Barracks in Garissa, an Armoured Brigade at Kahawa Garrison, an Artillery Brigade at Gilgil Barracks, and an Engineers Brigade at Thika Barracks. Special operations are organized under the Army Special Operations Brigade headquartered at Kenyatta Barracks in Gilgil, which controls units including the 20th Parachute Battalion, the 30th Special Forces Battalion, and the 40th Ranger Strike Force Battalion. Operational garrisons are located in Kahawa, Embakasi, Lanet, Gilgil, Modika, Nyali, Eldoret, and Isiolo.

The main combat arms consist of armor, mechanized and motorized infantry, artillery, air defense, and army aviation. Armored units operate Vickers Mk 3 main battle tanks alongside Panhard AML armored reconnaissance vehicles. Mechanized and motorized infantry units deploy NORINCO WZ-551 infantry fighting vehicles, BTR-60 armored personnel carriers, BRDM-2 scout cars, and various mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles including Katmerciler Hizir, IAG Guardian Xtream, Otokar Cobra II, and CS/VP3 platforms. Artillery units field Nora B-52 self-propelled howitzers, L118 light guns, Oto Melara Mod 56 pack howitzers, and BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launchers. Air defense assets include ZU-23-2 towed anti-aircraft guns, Rapier surface-to-air missile systems, and Igla-S man-portable air defense systems. Army aviation is centered around the 50 Air Cavalry Battalion based at Embakasi Garrison, operating MD 500 and MD 530F Cayuse Warrior light attack helicopters, Bell UH-1H Huey II utility helicopters, and Harbin Z-9 helicopters.

Primary operational responsibilities encompass national border defense, internal security, and counter-insurgency operations. The Kenya Army maintains expeditionary deployments in Somalia as part of African Union peace support missions, transitioning into the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia. Kenyan forces manage Sector 2 operations headquartered at Dhobley, conducting counter-insurgency actions and civil-military operations against Al-Shabaab. The army has also deployed personnel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo under United Nations and regional mandates, including the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the East African Community Regional Force. Army modernization programs focus on enhancing mobility, protected transport, and aerial fire support through acquisitions of tactical armored vehicles, mine-resistant platforms, and attack helicopters.
