Description
The Cobra II is a 4x4 wheeled armored tactical vehicle developed and produced by Turkish defense manufacturer Otokar. Unveiled at the International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) in May 2013, the vehicle is the direct successor to the earlier Cobra model, featuring increased armor protection and a larger chassis.
Designed for roles including border security, peacekeeping, and troop transport, the Cobra II provides protection against land mines and improvised explosive devices. The standard armored personnel carrier variant accommodates up to ten occupants, including the driver and commander, though seating capacity varies by configuration. Standard equipment includes run-flat tires, a central tire inflation system, blackout lighting, thermal front and rear-view cameras, multi-point seat belts, and radio provisions. Optional equipment includes a self-recovery winch, CBRN filtration kit, automatic fire extinguishing system, intercom system, auxiliary power unit, and navigation systems. The vehicle can be fitted with crew-operated machine guns or remote-controlled weapon systems (RCWS) armed with automatic cannons up to 30 mm, grenade launchers, anti-tank guided missiles, or short-range surface-to-air missiles. Modular variants include medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), command, engineering, mortar carrier, anti-tank, pickup, and amphibious configurations. The automotive line features a six-cylinder, water-cooled turbocharged diesel engine compatible with F-34 and F-54 fuels, paired with an automatic transmission.
The vehicle is operated by multiple countries and international organizations, including Turkey, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Pakistan, Romania, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Tunisia, Ukraine, Syria, and the United Nations. The Turkish Armed Forces deployed Cobra II vehicles equipped with surveillance radar, target detection systems, and thermal cameras to patrol the Turkish-Syrian border in 2017. Ukrainian forces introduced the Cobra II into service in 2023, utilizing the MEDEVAC variant during the 2024 Kursk offensive. Romania selected the vehicle in nine configurations for its light armored tactical vehicle program, establishing domestic production via a joint venture between Otokar and Automecanica SA.
