Kuwait Army

The Kuwait Land Forces constitute the ground warfare branch of the Armed Forces of Kuwait. Armored units operate M1A2 and M1A2K main battle tanks alongside Yugoslav-built M-84 main battle tanks. Mechanized infantry units are equipped with Desert Warrior infantry fighting vehicles, BMP-2 and BMP-3 series IFVs, M113 armored personnel carriers, and Pandur 8x8 armored vehicles. Anti-tank inventory includes TOW-2, Kornet-E, and Javelin missile systems. Field artillery formations field Chinese-built PLZ-45 155mm self-propelled howitzers, American M109 self-propelled howitzers, and Soviet-designed BM-30 Smerch multiple launch rocket systems. Ground-based air defense is managed jointly with the Kuwait Air Defense Command, operating MIM-104 Patriot and Spada 2000 surface-to-air missile batteries, while air support is provided by Kuwait Air Force AH-64 Apache attack helicopters.

The command structure operates under a brigade-based organization administered by the Ministry of Defense and General Staff Headquarters in Kuwait City. Maneuver formations include the 15th Armored Brigade, 35th Armored Brigade, 6th Mechanized Brigade, 26th Mechanized Brigade, and 94th Mechanized Brigade. Specialized elements include the 25th Commando Brigade, the Amiri Guard Brigade responsible for executive protection, an independent Field Artillery Brigade, and military police units. Primary garrisons are positioned near Al-Jahra at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Military Camp. Ground forces also utilize training facilities and firing ranges at the Udairi Range Complex, sharing infrastructure co-located with allied military forces at Camp Buehring and Camp Arifjan.

Operational tasks include border protection, territorial defense, and joint security operations alongside the Kuwait National Guard. The combat history of the land force includes defensive and counter-offensive engagements during the 1990–1991 Gulf War, such as the Battle of the Bridges, as well as operations during the liberation of Kuwait. Land force contingents were also deployed to the southern border of Saudi Arabia during coalition operations in Yemen. Domestic arms production is minimal, making force modernization reliant on international defense acquisitions from the United States, Russia, China, and Western European suppliers. Recent modernization efforts focus on the acquisition and operational integration of M1A2K main battle tanks, upgrading BMP-3 armored fighting vehicles, and updating field command and tactical communication systems.
