Description
The Folgore is a portable, single-shot recoilless anti-tank rocket launcher. Development began in France to replace the LRAC F1, with an initial order placed in 1984. The system was utilized as an interim solution prior to the adoption of the Eryx missile. Production took place between 1985 and 2006, during which 120,000 units were manufactured.
The weapon features an aramid fibre launcher tube and a retractable sight. It employs an electrically fused shaped charge warhead designed to function at impact angles up to 80 degrees. The warhead is capable of piercing rolled homogeneous armour. The rocket incorporates a safety mechanism that prevents the projectile from arming until it has traveled a minimum distance from the launcher. Due to the intensity of the blast and noise, the system is classified as a traumatic weapon, and personnel are restricted in the number of times they may fire it during peacetime. The system can also be configured as an off-route mine by mounting the rocket on a tripod with a sensor package or tripwires.
The system entered service in 1985 and is operated by several countries, including Belgium, Chile, Colombia, Finland, Italy, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Spain. It has seen combat in the South African Border War, the Gulf War, and the Syrian Civil War. In the Syrian conflict, the weapon was used by both the Syrian Arab Army and the Free Syrian Army. It has also been supplied to Ukraine.
