Description

Kiel Naval Base (Marinestützpunkt Kiel-Wik) is a German Navy base on the Kiel Fjord in the Wik district of Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, on the Baltic coast of Germany.

The base is the seat of Einsatzflottille 1, the flotilla that groups the German Navy's mine countermeasures, corvette, submarine, boat and naval special forces units, together with the German element of the Centre of Excellence for Operations in Confined and Shallow Waters. Marinestützpunktkommando Kiel administers the installation and its harbour facilities. Seagoing units homeported at Kiel-Wik include the 3. Minensuchgeschwader (3rd Minesweeping Squadron), the Unterstützungsgeschwader (Support Squadron) and the sail training ship Gorch Fock.

Other Bundeswehr elements at the site include the Kiel medical support centre (Sanitätsunterstützungszentrum) of the Zentraler Sanitätsdienst, the Kiel naval band (Marinemusikkorps Kiel), the Landeskommando Schleswig-Holstein and 4th Company, Feldjägerregiment 1, of the Streitkräftebasis. The Bundeswehr fire service maintains a station at the base, and the Bundesamt für Infrastruktur, Umweltschutz und Dienstleistungen der Bundeswehr operates a service centre at the Feldstraße barracks and further offices on the Warnemünder Straße and Rostocker Straße properties, including a construction management centre and a Bundeswehr careers centre.

In April 2021 the Inspector of the Navy, Kay-Achim Schönbach, ordered the harbour, previously the Tirpitzhafen, renamed Marinestützpunkt Kiel-Wik; the Tirpitzmole and Scheermole became the Gorch-Fock-Mole and Oskar-Kusch-Mole respectively.
