Warnemünde Naval Base (Hohe Düne)

Warnemünde Naval Base, also known as Hohe Düne, is a base of the German Navy on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, on the north shore of the Breitling at the mouth of the Warnow in the Rostock district of Hohe Düne. It is administered by the Marinestützpunktkommando Warnemünde, which since 1 July 2006 has been subordinate to Einsatzflottille 1 at Kiel. The base command provides basing and logistic support to the units stationed there, which are not themselves subordinate to it.

The base homeports the 1. Korvettengeschwader, formed in 2006, and the tenders Elbe and Donau of the Unterstützungsgeschwader. It is the type base for the Navy's corvettes, a function inherited from its earlier role as type base for the fast attack craft force. Also resident are the Bundespolizeiinspektion See with its patrol boats and a station of the German aeronautical search and rescue service. Facilities comprise harbour installations, staff accommodation and barracks; the Marinematerialdepot 3 was subordinated to the base command from 1 April 1991 until 1 January 1995.

The site was requisitioned by the Kaiserliche Marine on 1 August 1914 for use as a naval air station, and in the Second World War housed naval aviators together with Kriegsmarine harbour protection and guard flotillas. The installation in its present form dates from the build-up of the East German naval forces, which established the Hohe Düne fleet base on the Breitling; it was the home port of the Volksmarine's 4. Flottille, the 6. Grenzbrigade Küste and elements of the GDR hydrographic service, berthing coastal escorts, submarine chasers, minesweepers, patrol boats and auxiliaries. After 1990 the remaining Volksmarine units, grouped into a coastal guard squadron, were disbanded by the end of 1991, and the base was rebuilt as the German Navy's type base for the Schnellbootflottille, whose staff moved from Flensburg-Mürwik in September 1994, followed by the 2. Schnellbootgeschwader in November 1994 and the 7. Schnellbootgeschwader in December 1995; the fast attack craft units were disbanded in 2006 and 2016 respectively as the corvette and support squadrons took their place.
