German Navy

The German Navy, the Deutsche Marine, is the framework naval force for NATO in the Baltic and one of the alliance's principal anti-submarine and mine warfare contributors in the North Atlantic. Its role has been transformed since 2022: the Baltic has become, with Finnish and Swedish accession, effectively a NATO inner sea, while Russian submarine activity in the Atlantic and sabotage of undersea cables and pipelines have made the protection of critical seabed infrastructure a standing operational task rather than a contingency.

The surface fleet is built on three frigate classes: Sachsen-class air defence frigates, the older Brandenburg class, and the four Baden-Württemberg-class ships designed for long deployments with rotating crews. Braunschweig-class corvettes handle littoral and Baltic tasks, with a second batch of five in construction, and the mine countermeasures force of Frankenthal-class hunters is being modernised around uncrewed underwater vehicles. The submarine arm consists of six Type 212A boats, air-independent and among the quietest conventional submarines in service, and the Berlin-class replenishment ships allow the fleet to sustain task groups away from home ports.

Procurement has been reshaped twice in quick succession. The F126 frigate programme, which would have been the largest German surface-combatant project of the postwar era, was cancelled in June 2026 after sustained cost growth, delays and contractor difficulties. In its place the Bundeswehr turned to Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems' MEKO A-200 DEU, designated the F128 class, and in July 2026 the Bundestag budget committee approved 6.3 billion euros for the first four ships, with an option on four more, the first delivery scheduled for December 2029 and one hull every nine months thereafter.

The submarine force is on a similar growth path. Germany has ordered six Type 212CD boats, developed jointly with Norway to a common design and considerably larger than the 212A, with German deliveries running into the 2030s. Naval aviation is being rebuilt around the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, replacing the P-3C, and the navy is investing in uncrewed surface and underwater systems for seabed surveillance, an area where the Baltic's shallow, cable-dense waters make persistent monitoring both feasible and urgent.

Operationally the Deutsche Marine contributes continuously to NATO's standing maritime and mine countermeasures groups and to Baltic Sentry, the mission launched in January 2025 to deter and investigate damage to undersea cables attributed to shadow-fleet vessels. It also supports European Union operations in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea approaches, contributes to the maritime task force off Lebanon, and has resumed periodic Indo-Pacific deployments, including transits of the Taiwan Strait, signalling a willingness to operate beyond the European theatre even as the bulk of its effort concentrates on the Baltic and North Atlantic.
