Naval Base Coronado

Naval Base Coronado is a consolidated United States Navy shore installation in San Diego County, California, operated by the Navy and administered under Navy Region Southwest. It comprises eight separate facilities spread from San Clemente Island, some 70 miles west of San Diego in the Pacific, to Camp Michael Monsoor and Camp Morena in the mountains roughly 50 to 60 miles east of the city. The anchor site, Naval Air Station North Island, occupies the northern end of Coronado at the entrance to San Diego Bay. Together the eight facilities cover more than 57,000 acres, making Naval Base Coronado the largest command in the Navy's southwest region and the largest employer in San Diego County, with over 36,000 military and civilian personnel.

Naval Air Station North Island homeports aircraft carriers of the Pacific Fleet and hosts nearly all of the fleet's helicopter squadrons, several fixed-wing squadrons and multiple Naval Air Reserve activities. It is the headquarters of Commander, Naval Air Forces. Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, on the Silver Strand south of the air station, supports 27 tenant commands and is the West Coast focal point for special warfare and expeditionary warfare training and operations, with a resident population of some 5,000 military personnel and 7,000 students. The Silver Strand Training Complex, between Coronado and Imperial Beach, is used for special operations forces training. Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach, known locally as Ream Field, is a helicopter facility on 1,204 acres within the city limits of Imperial Beach. Naval Auxiliary Landing Field San Clemente Island, also designated Frederick Sherman Field, provides an airfield on the island.

Inland, the Remote Training Site at Warner Springs conducts Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape training for Navy and Marine Corps flight crews, Naval Special Warfare, Force Reconnaissance and Marine Corps special operations personnel; it is one of two such Navy sites, the other being in Maine. The Warner Springs camp, at about 3,200 feet in the Cleveland National Forest, comprises a headquarters and administrative area, staff barracks, a wastewater treatment plant and a training compound. Camp Michael Monsoor, formerly the La Posta Mountain Warfare Training Facility, is a 1,063-acre site near Campo used by the Naval Special Warfare Center; the adjacent Camp Morena lies north of Lake Morena. North Island also holds Fleet Readiness Center Southwest, formerly the Naval Aviation Depot, and forms part of the Navy's largest aerospace-industrial complex.

Naval Base Coronado was created in 1997, merging the eight previously separate installations under a single commanding officer.
