Naval Base Kitsap

Naval Base Kitsap is a United States Navy installation on the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington state, on the western side of Puget Sound near Bremerton. Operated by the Navy under Navy Region Northwest, it provides base operating services and support for surface ships and for fleet ballistic missile and other nuclear-powered submarines, and is the home base for the fleet throughout West Puget Sound. It covers some 12,000 acres and is the third-largest Navy base in the United States, with a workforce of over 15,000 active duty personnel.

The base is a single command composed of installations at Bremerton, Bangor, Indian Island, Manchester and Keyport. The Bangor waterfront is one of two Trident ballistic missile submarine bases operated by the Navy, serving the Pacific Fleet; the Atlantic Fleet equivalent is Kings Bay, Georgia. Commander, Carrier Strike Group Three is headquartered at the base. Bremerton hosts an inactive ship maintenance facility for decommissioned warships, including aircraft carriers, cruisers and littoral combat ships.

Bremerton is the site of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, which performs drydocking and overhaul of active naval vessels. It is one of the Navy's four nuclear-capable shipyards and holds the only dry dock on the West Coast able to take a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. Adjacent to the Bangor submarine waterfront is Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific, where submarine-launched ballistic missiles are stored and maintained; the base is one of two strategic nuclear weapons facilities in the Navy. It also operates the Navy's largest fuel depot, at Manchester, and Naval Magazine Indian Island. Naval Hospital Bremerton is located on the base, which further supports hosted combat commands, tenant activities, ships' crews and civilian employees. The command received the Commander in Chief's Award for Installation Excellence in 2005 and 2017.

The Bangor site was established in 1942 and Naval Station Bremerton in 1946. Bangor was subsequently developed as a Trident submarine base for the Pacific Fleet, with associated strategic weapons storage and handling facilities. The two installations were merged in 2004 to form Naval Base Kitsap under a single commanding officer.
