Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam

Naval Dockyard (Visakhapatnam), abbreviated ND(V), is an Indian Navy shipbuilding and ship repair yard at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on India's east coast. It is the second of the Navy's two principal dockyards, after Naval Dockyard (Mumbai).

The dockyard undertakes refit, repair and maintenance of surface ships and submarines, handling around 22 hulls a year as of 2016. Facilities include dry docks and jetty berthing, with workshop capacity for machining, blacksmithing and carpentry work developed from the earlier base repair organisation. The yard occupies some 704 acres, of which 550 acres were acquired from the Visakhapatnam Port Trust in 1962. It adjoins the shore establishment INS Circars.

The site's naval use began in December 1941, when the Royal Indian Navy established a boat repair workshop at Visakhapatnam to support Indian Army units in Burma; it was expanded in March 1942 under the coastal forces programme and gained a 200-tonne slipway in 1947. In 1953 the facility became a Base Repair Organisation, and in 1958 the Union Cabinet approved the establishment of a naval base and dockyard at Visakhapatnam. A new jetty and workshop building were sanctioned in 1962, and in 1972 the Base Repair Organisation was redesignated Naval Dockyard.
