Improved Kilo-class (Project 636.3) diesel-electric submarine damaged on 13 September 2023 during the same Storm Shadow cruise missile strike that destroyed the landing ship Minsk at Sevmorzavod shipyard in Sevastopol. The submarine suffered a pierced bow and two hull breaches, with fire damage throughout. Satellite imagery confirmed significant structural damage. Rostov-on-Don was commissioned in 2014 as the second Project 636.3 submarine for the Black Sea Fleet and had previously launched Kalibr cruise missiles against targets in Syria and Ukraine.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham authorized MBDA on August 24 to release technical data on the UK-controlled components of the Storm Shadow and SCALP cruise missile, according to Breaking Defense, unblocking Ukrainian production of a weapon whose donor stockpiles are close to exhausted.
