Description
Part of a 76.6 billion dollar submarine package awarded on 29 July 2026, this 29.5 billion dollar contract covers five Build II Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines for General Dynamics Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding. Newport News will build and deliver six module sections per boat as a major construction partner. The Columbia class replaces the fourteen Ohio-class boats in the sea-based leg of the US nuclear triad. The Pentagon submarine programme executive described the award as a historic investment in undersea superiority, while a separate 5 billion dollars in the package funds shipyard and workforce improvements at both builders.
