Description

Decommissioned on 6 August 2026 at the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, part of Naval Base Kitsap in Washington state, exactly 38 years after her commissioning on the same date in 1988. Built by General Dynamics Electric Boat, San Juan was the first of the Improved Los Angeles (688i) submarines, introducing a strengthened sail for under-ice operations, retractable bow diving planes and twelve vertical launch tubes. She became the first Los Angeles-class boat to surface through Arctic ice in 1993 and the first U.S. warship to visit South Africa after apartheid in 2009. Her final underway, in 2023, took her through the Northwest Passage. Eighteen Los Angeles-class boats remain in commission.
