Description
The F110, or Bonifaz class, is a series of multi-purpose anti-submarine frigates under construction by Navantia for the Spanish Navy, set to replace the Santa María-class (Oliver Hazard Perry derivative) frigates. Five ships are on order for €4.3 billion, with construction of the lead ship Bonifaz begun at Ferrol in April 2022 and her launch in September 2025 opening the delivery sequence toward service entry from 2027.
Displacing about 6,100 tons for 145 meters, the class pairs the Aegis combat system with Lockheed Martin's SPY-7 solid-state radar mounted on an integrated mast — making Spain one of the first users of the new-generation sensor — supported by Spanish-developed combat electronics from Indra and Navantia. Armament includes a 16-cell Mk 41 VLS for ESSM and Standard missiles, Naval Strike Missiles, a 127 mm main gun, torpedo launchers and a multi-mission bay; a hybrid CODLOG propulsion plant with electric cruise drive optimises the ship for quiet submarine hunting with towed array sonar.
The F110 is the third generation of Aegis ships built at Ferrol after the F100 Álvaro de Bazán class and the Australian Hobart class, and the design underpins Navantia's export offers. The five ships revive names of Spanish naval heroes: Bonifaz, Roger de Lauria, Menéndez de Avilés, Luis de Córdova and Barceló.
