Description

The ZBL-08 is an eight-wheeled amphibious infantry fighting vehicle developed by Norinco. Development of the vehicle family began in the 1990s to replace older Chinese wheeled platforms, with prototype vehicles undergoing road tests in 2006. Designed for quick reaction operations, infantry fire support, and battlefield logistics, the vehicle entered service in 2008. A modified chassis variant with an enlarged trim vane, additional armor, and lower front pontoon boxes appeared in 2025.

The ZBL-08 features a modular design comprising engine, transmission, control, suspension, hull, and weapon station modules. It accommodates a crew of three along with seven infantry troops. Integrated onboard electronics include a digital battlefield management system, satellite navigation, tactical datalinks, automatic fire suppression, and nuclear, biological, and chemical protection. The driver operates using a helmet-mounted night vision system linked to chassis-mounted charge-coupled device sensors. The all-welded steel hull and turret are fitted with alumina ceramic composite armor plates, providing protection against shell splinters, 12.7 mm armor-piercing incendiary rounds at 100 meters, and 25 mm projectiles across the frontal arc at 1,000 meters. Laser warning receivers and smoke dischargers are also installed.

Armament consists of a ZPT-99 30 mm autocannon and a coaxial Type 86 7.62 mm machine gun mounted in the turret. Launch rails for HJ-73C anti-tank guided missiles can be mounted on each side of the turret. The gunner utilizes a computerized fire control system incorporating gun stabilization, automatic target tracking, a laser rangefinder, and thermal optics.

The vehicle is powered by a Deutz BF6M1015C water-cooled V-type 6-cylinder diesel engine paired with an automated manual transmission, with power steering applied to the front four wheels. Mobility on soft or degraded terrain is maintained using steel-reinforced radial tires and a central tire inflation system. Water propulsion is delivered by rear-mounted, hydraulically driven water jets.

The ZBL-08 is fielded by the People's Liberation Army Ground Force and Marine Corps. Export derivatives of the Type 08 family, designated VN-1, are separately operated by several countries.
