Description
The ZSD-89, designated under the industrial indexes WZ534 for domestic use and YW534 or VP1 for export, is a Chinese tracked armored personnel carrier developed by Norinco during the 1980s. Derived from the earlier export-oriented Type 85 armored fighting vehicle, it entered service with the People's Liberation Army in the late 1990s and was first displayed publicly in 1999.
The vehicle is constructed with a welded steel hull that provides ballistic protection against small arms fire and armor-piercing rounds up to 12.7mm. The ZSD-89 accommodates a total complement of 15, comprising a commander, driver, and 13 passengers. The driver is seated in the front left of the hull and is provided with a single-piece hatch opening to the left, along with three day periscopes, one of which can be substituted for a night vision device. The commander sits directly behind the driver under a separate single-piece hatch. Troop entry and egress are facilitated by a large rear door and two oblong roof hatches over the troop compartment.
Power is provided by a Deutz BF8L 413F air-cooled, turbocharged four-stroke diesel engine positioned to the right rear of the driver. The engine feeds a manual transmission with five forward gears and one reverse gear. The drivetrain uses a torsion bar suspension system with front drive sprockets, five dual rubber-typed road wheels per side, track-return rollers, and rear idlers. The ZSD-89 is amphibious, propelling itself through water using its tracks after raising a front-mounted folding trim board. Standard equipment includes a nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protection system, a Type 889 or CWT-167 radio, and a Type 803 or CYY-168 intercom system.
Armament consists of a 12.7mm QJC88 heavy machine gun mounted on an open cupola over a center roof hatch. The gun offers 360-degree traverse and can elevate to 90 degrees. For countermeasure defense, a cluster of four 76mm smoke grenade dischargers is mounted on each side of the forward hull.
The ZSD-89 is fielded by China and has been exported to a small number of foreign operators.
