387th Air Expeditionary Group
Description
Abdullah Al-Mubarak Air Base occupies a portion of the Kuwait International Airport complex in the Farwaniya Governorate, Kuwait, 15.5 kilometres south of the centre of Kuwait City. The airport complex covers 37.7 square kilometres and operates as a joint civil-military facility. Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways use it as their primary hub.
The airport first opened in 1927–1928. Its main passenger terminal opened in 1979. During the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990, Iraqi forces seized the airport. On 27 February 1991, during the Gulf War, U.S. and Iraqi armoured forces fought at the site in what is now known as the Battle of Kuwait International Airport.
The base is used by the Kuwait Air Force and contains the service's headquarters and the Kuwait Air Force Museum. Since October 2014, the Italian Air Force has operated Boeing KC-767 tanker aircraft from the base in support of operations against ISIL.
The base also serves as an air mobility gateway for the United States Air Force and coalition forces. The original gateway operated for more than 20 years. In 2019 it was replaced by Cargo City, a facility adjacent to a new ramp on the airport's western side. The 387th Air Expeditionary Group operates Cargo City. The 5th Expeditionary Air Mobility Squadron provides additional services there, including maintenance for military and contract flights.
