Description
AFB Bloemspruit is a military airbase located in Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa, operated jointly by the South African Air Force and the Airports Company South Africa. It is co-located with Bloemfontein Airport, with both entities sharing the airfield facilities. The base is responsible for maintaining the military airstrip at Vastrap near Upington.
The base hosts several South African Air Force units, including 16 Squadron, an attack helicopter unit, and 87 Helicopter Flying School, a helicopter training unit. Reserve transport and support capabilities are provided by 106 Squadron and 107 Squadron, which are light transport reserve units, alongside 506 Squadron, which handles security services.
