AFB Waterkloof (Waterkloof Air Station)

Air Force Base Waterkloof is a South African Air Force military airbase situated south of Pretoria, Gauteng, near Centurion and Air Force Base Swartkop. Officially opened on 1 August 1938 as Waterkloof Air Station, the facility has remained in continuous service with the South African Air Force and was upgraded to an air force base during World War II.

The base is operated by the South African Air Force, holds National Key Point status, and is the air force's busiest airbase. Operational flying units stationed at the facility include 21 Squadron for VIP transport, 28 Squadron for medium transport, and 41 Squadron and 44 Squadron for light transport. Reserve light transport formations include 111 Squadron and 140 Squadron. Base security is maintained by 504 Squadron, and maintenance support is provided by 5 Air Servicing Unit.

Additional units hosted at the base include the Joint Air Reconnaissance Intelligence Centre, which operates as the South African National Defence Force National Imagery Exploitation Centre providing strategic imagery intelligence support; the Central Photographic Institute; the Mobile Deployment Wing for emergency response; and the SAAF Telecommunications Centre.

Infrastructure at the base includes a passenger terminal, a control tower, a non-directional beacon, and a VHF omnidirectional range. The base also manages the external Ditholo Training Area.
