Description
AFB Durban is a South African Air Force base situated in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The facility is located at the northern end of the airfield and has shared its runway with the former Durban International Airport since September 1956.
The base is operated by the South African Air Force. Its primary resident operational unit is 15 Squadron, a helicopter unit conducting landward and maritime search and rescue operations. The squadron operates Atlas Oryx and MBB/Kawasaki BK 117 helicopters, maintaining flights of Oryx at Durban and a detached flight of BK 117s at Port Elizabeth.
AFB Durban also hosts 508 Squadron and 105 Squadron. 105 Squadron functions as a Citizen Force reserve unit for liaison and crime prevention patrols, utilizing civil light aircraft operated predominantly by civilian pilots.
Aviation and radio navigation facilities supporting operations include a Non-Directional Beacon, a VHF Omnidirectional Range, and an Automatic Terminal Information Service.
