Description

Air Force Base Hoedspruit is a joint military and civilian installation located in Hoedspruit, Limpopo, South Africa, adjacent to Kruger National Park. Owned by the Department of Defence and operated by the South African Air Force, the base officially opened on 1 July 1978. Infrastructure built at the base includes armoured and hardened aircraft shelters, as well as revetments situated near the runways for aircraft on immediate takeoff standby. In the early 1990s, a section at the southern end of the airfield was converted into Eastgate Airport to handle civilian air traffic.

The base hosts several South African Air Force units. Operational units include 19 Squadron, which operates helicopters, and 101 Squadron, a reserve unit operating light transport aircraft. Ground and support units stationed at the base comprise 514 Squadron for security services, 7 Aircraft Servicing Unit for maintenance support, the Lowveld Airspace Control Sector, and the Air Force Command and Control School.

Civilian facilities at Eastgate Airport host commercial passenger flights operated by Airlink, CemAir, and FlySafair, connecting the base to Cape Town and Johannesburg. Charter flight operators using the airfield include Federal Air, Genair, Cesszani, ExecuJet Aviation Group, SA Historical Flight, and Bataleur.
