Description
BAF Base Bir Uttom A. K. Khandker, commonly known as BAF Base Kurmitola and formerly designated BAF Base Bangabandhu, is a Bangladesh Air Force installation located in Kurmitola, Dhaka, adjacent to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. It is operated by the Bangladesh Air Force and represents one of nine airbases in the country.
The facility sits on land first developed in 1941 during the Second World War, when the British government constructed a landing strip north of Tejgaon to serve as a secondary airfield supporting military operations in Kohima and Burma. In 1981, this landing strip was repurposed into an international airport. The current airbase facility was established at the same site and inaugurated on 9 April 2013. The base received national standard status on 4 December 2016. On 9 March 2025, the interim government renamed the facility after A. K. Khandker, the first Chief of Air Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Mukti Bahini.
The base operates military aircraft, with equipment including Hongdu K-8W jet trainers inducted at the facility in December 2014.
