Borisovsky Khotilovo

Borisovsky Khotilovo is an active military air base in Tver Oblast, Russia, located 24 km south of Bologoye. Aviation activity in the area began prior to World War II. Between March 1945 and July 1946, the site hosted the 257th Svirsky Fighter Aviation Division, which operated Yakovlev Yak-9M and Lavochkin La-7 aircraft. During the 1950s and 1960s, the original airfield was situated along the nearby highway and utilized metal ladders for its takeoff and taxiing surfaces. Aircraft arrived unassembled via the Kuzhenkino railway station. In 1970, the installation was relocated a few kilometers across the Shlin river to its present position.

The installation operated as an interceptor facility throughout the Cold War. In the 1960s, its resident regiment flew the Sukhoi Su-9. In 1980, the unit transitioned to the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25, which it operated until 1993. Beginning in 1994, the regiment re-armed with the Mikoyan MiG-31.

Between April 2006 and 2008, the facility underwent reconstruction. Apron surfaces and taxiways were replaced with concrete monolith, and a new control tower and launch command center were built. Following these modifications, the base gained the capacity to accommodate all types of Russian military aircraft, including the Tupolev Tu-160 bomber. In 2007, Borisovsky Khotilovo became a joint-based airfield, opening to civilian flights by the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Russia" special flight squadron, which operates transport flights for the President of the Russian Federation.

Currently operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces, the base functions primarily as an interceptor facility. It hosts the 790th Fighter Aviation Regiment, which operates squadrons of MiG-31 interceptors and previously integrated a squadron of Sukhoi Su-27s from the Bezhetsk Fighter Regiment. The installation also accommodates the 3rd Squadron, flying Sukhoi Su-35S aircraft. Base infrastructure includes three groups of fan revetments designed for aircraft storage and protection.
