Description

Capodichino Air Base is located 3.2 nautical miles north-northeast of Naples, Italy, in the Campo di Marte district. Officially designated Aeroporto di Napoli-Capodichino Ugo Niutta after a World War I pilot, the site was established as a military airfield during World War I to provide air defense against Austro-Hungarian and German attacks. During World War II, the installation served as a combat airfield for the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during the Italian Campaign. Stationed units included RAF No. 324 Wing operating squadrons of Supermarine Spitfires and several US Twelfth Air Force units, including the 79th Fighter Group, 47th Bombardment Group, 33d Fighter Group, and 332nd Fighter Group. These units operated aircraft types including the P-40 Warhawk, P-47 Thunderbolt, A-20 Havoc, and P-39 Airacobra. Following combat operations, the airfield functioned as a transshipment hub for the Air Transport Command.

The installation is classified as a military airport open to commercial air traffic. The United States Navy has maintained a presence at the site since 1951. Naval Support Activity Naples is a tenant of the northwestern area of the base, and the installation serves as the home for U.S. Naval Forces Europe and the U.S. Sixth Fleet. The United States Navy manages military and civilian aircraft logistics at the airport.

The base covers 233 hectares and contains a single runway and one taxiway. The apron includes 29 stands, nine of which are self-maneuvering. In addition to military and commercial operations, the site hosts industrial aeronautical activities by companies including Atitech, Alenia Aeronautica, Aeronavali, and Tecnam Costruzioni Aeronautiche. Terminal facilities include Terminal 1, which contains airside sections A, B, and C for domestic and international flight processing.
