Description

Frosinone Air Base, designated as Aeroporto di Roma-Frosinone and named after Captain Pilot Girolamo Moscardini, is located 5 kilometers from Frosinone, Italy. The facility is operated by the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare) and hosts the 72° Stormo.

The airfield was established on January 1, 1939, on a pre-existing emergency landing strip and was classified as a 3rd Class Armed Airport in March 1939. In April 1943, the Luftwaffe assumed control of the base, using it as a reconnaissance hub for central Italy and the Mediterranean. During this period, the base hosted the Wettererkundungsstaffel 26 and Bf 109G aircraft of Jagdgeschwader 53. The installation was bombed on September 11, 1943. From 1944 to 1946, it housed the Bombing and Fighter Training School of the Italian Co-Belligerent Air Force, and later the Transport and Aeronavigation Training School, which operated Martin Baltimore aircraft.

In April 1955, the Helicopter Training Unit relocated to Frosinone. The Helicopter Flight School was formally established at the site in 1960, and the resident unit was redesignated as the 72° Stormo on November 1, 1985.

The 72° Stormo and its primary operational component, the 208° Gruppo, currently operate from the base. The wing utilizes NH-500E helicopters to provide flight instruction for helicopter pilots across the Italian military. In addition to its training mission, the 72° Stormo conducts operative missions in international theaters for peacekeeping and peace-enforcing operations.
