Description
Changi Air Base (East), also known as the Changi East Complex, is an extension of the original Changi Air Base, which was subsequently renamed Changi Air Base (West). The facility is located approximately 2 kilometres east of Changi Airport and 1.5 kilometres west of Changi Naval Base. Groundbreaking for the base took place on 15 July 2002, and it officially opened on 29 November 2004. The airfield was temporarily closed for development and reopened at the end of 2018.
The base infrastructure includes a runway physically connected to Changi Airport, supporting joint military and civilian operations. The geographic position near the South China Sea reduces aircraft transit time to offshore zones compared to Tengah Air Base and Paya Lebar Air Base, lowering fuel consumption and operating costs for stationed units.
The facility is operated by the Republic of Singapore Air Force, housing squadrons from the Air Combat Command and Air Power Generation Command. The 112 Squadron operates a fleet of Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transports. The 145 Squadron operates F-16D Block 52+ Fighting Falcons, which are configured for extended range and ground attack operations. Base support, maintenance, and power generation roles are fulfilled by the 208, 508, 608, 708, and 808 Squadrons.
