Description
RMAF Kuantan is a Royal Malaysian Air Force base located in Kuantan, Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia. Owned by the Ministry of Defence and operated by the Royal Malaysian Air Force, the base shares facilities and a runway with Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Airport.
Originally established as RAF Kuantan, the location hosted Royal Air Force detachments between 1935 and 1969. RAF units stationed at the airfield included No. 36 Squadron flying Vickers Vildebeest III aircraft, No. 60 and No. 62 Squadrons flying Bristol Blenheim I aircraft, No. 100 Squadron flying Bristol Beaufort I aircraft, and No. 32 and No. 45 Squadrons flying English Electric Canberra B.15 aircraft.
The airbase was established under the Royal Malaysian Air Force on 24 June 1968. Initial operations comprised No. 3 Squadron and No. 9 Squadron equipped with Canadair CL-41G Tebuan jet trainers. In 1985, Douglas A-4 Skyhawks and BAE Systems Hawks replaced the CL-41G Tebuans. In 1995, the airbase received Mikoyan MiG-29 fighters assigned to No. 17 Squadron and No. 19 Squadron.
RMAF Kuantan hosts operational flying units from the RMAF 1st Division and Training Division. Active assigned units include No. 10 Squadron, which operates Eurocopter EC725 helicopters, and 3 FTC, which operates Aermacchi MB-339 aircraft. No. 17 Squadron and No. 19 Squadron remain assigned to the airbase, maintaining Mikoyan MiG-29 aircraft in reserve. The base also hosts Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King helicopters.
Base facilities include the Aerospace Technology Systems Corporation (ATSC) MiG Technical Centre, which serves as an authorized maintenance facility for the Mikoyan MiG-29 aircraft stationed at the installation.
