Description

Figl Air Base is an Austrian Air Force (Österreichische Luftstreitkräfte) installation located 5 km east-southeast of Tulln and 30 km northwest of Vienna. Construction of the facility began in June 1938 for the Luftwaffe, and military personnel arrived in October 1939. During World War II, the airfield served as a base for aerial attacks against Yugoslavia and hosted Air-war School VII. Aircraft assigned during this period included the Arado Ar 66, Junkers Ju 87, and Heinkel He 111. Following the arrival of Soviet forces in April 1945, the base transferred to United States control in July 1945 under the Four-Powers agreement. Operated by the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) as Tulln Air Base, the site hosted troop carrier units flying C-47 Skytrains and supported commercial Pan American World Airways flights. The facility was returned to Austrian control in 1955. Formerly designated Fliegerhorst Brumowski, the base was renamed Fliegerhorst Leopold Figl – Flugplatz General Pabisch in May 2024.

The base serves as the headquarters for the Luftunterstützungsgeschwader (Air Support Wing). Current operations include a medium transport helicopter squadron operating Sikorsky S-70A-42 Black Hawks, a multi-purpose transport helicopter squadron operating Bell OH-58B Kiowas, and a training and multi-purpose helicopter squadron operating AgustaWestland AW-169B Lions. The base also hosts a fixed-wing squadron of Pilatus PC-6 B2H2 Turbo Porters and an air reconnaissance squadron.

Infrastructure at the base includes Fliegerwerft 1, which is responsible for aircraft maintenance and overhauls, and the Bundesfachschule für Flugtechnik (Federal School for Aeronautical Engineering). The facility also provides the ground organization necessary for flight operations.
