Description
Hinterstoisser Air Base, designated Fliegerhorst Hinterstoisser, is a military airfield in Styria, Austria, near Zeltweg. It serves as the main airfield of the Austrian Air Force. The facility was established in 1957 and named for Austrian aviation pioneer Franz Hinterstoisser. Between 1957 and 1968, the airfield functioned as a motor racing circuit, hosting the 1964 Formula One Austrian Grand Prix and the World Sportscar Championship Zeltweg 500 Kilometres.
The base hosts the Austrian Air Force Surveillance Squadron, which has operated from the site since 1976. The unit previously operated the Saab 35OE Draken and Northrop F-5E Tiger II. Current operations include Eurofighter Typhoons, which the base began hosting in 2007. The installation also houses training units operating the Pilatus PC-7 and Diamond DA 40NG.
Infrastructure includes Hangar 8, which contains the Zeltweg Military Aviation Museum, a branch of the Vienna Museum of Military History. The museum collection comprises over 25 historic aircraft and associated military equipment. Aircraft on display include the Yakovlev Yak-18, the first aircraft to enter service with the Austrian Armed Forces of the Second Republic. Other types on display include the Aérospatiale Alouette III, Agusta-Bell 204, De Havilland DH.115 Vampire, Fouga CM.170 Magister, Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21R, Saab J29F, Saab 35OE Draken, Saab 105, and Short SC.7 Skyvan.
