Description
Roland R. Wright Air National Guard Base is located on the east side of Salt Lake City International Airport in Utah. The military presence at the location was established during World War II when the United States Army Air Forces created a base at the airport. Formerly known as the Salt Lake City Air National Guard Base, the installation was renamed in November 2014 in honor of Brigadier General Roland R. Wright.
The base is operated by the Utah Air National Guard and occupies approximately 140 acres as a U.S. Government cantonment area leased from the airport. The host wing for the installation is the 151st Wing, an Air Mobility Command-gained unit. Current personnel include hundreds of full-time Air Reserve Technicians and Active Guard and Reserve members, supplemented by more than 1,300 part-time traditional air national guardsmen.
Infrastructure at the installation comprises 65 buildings, including 47 industrial, 13 administrative, and three service facilities. The base also maintains a dedicated flight line. The primary mission of the 151st Wing involves the operation of KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft for aerial refueling requirements.
