Description
Hmawbi Air Base is a Myanmar Air Force installation located in Hmawbi Township, Yangon Region, Myanmar.
The airfield originated as RAF Hmawbi under the British Royal Air Force during the closing stages of the Second World War in Burma. A succession of Royal Air Force squadrons operated from the field in 1945 and 1946. No. 47 Squadron RAF was stationed there from 15 August 1945 to 15 January 1946 with the de Havilland Mosquito VI, and No. 110 Squadron RAF operated the same type from 16 August to 11 September 1945. No. 84 Squadron RAF held a brief detachment with Mosquito VIs between 10 and 12 September 1945, while No. 89 Squadron RAF flew the Mosquito XIX from the base between 6 and 25 September 1945. Transport operations were conducted by Douglas Dakota units: No. 96 Squadron RAF from 4 September 1945 to 16 April 1946, No. 117 Squadron RAF from 19 August to 17 December 1945, and No. 215 Squadron RAF from 19 August to 23 October 1945.
The base is now operated by the Myanmar Air Force and hosts 56 Squadron, equipped with the Mil Mi-17 medium transport helicopter.
