Description
Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is a United States military facility in Anchorage, Alaska. The installation was established in 2010 through the merger of Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson, as directed by the 2005 Base Closure and Realignment Commission. Both original components were constructed in 1940. On August 15, 2025, the base served as the location for a summit between the presidents of the United States and Russia.
The base is operated by the United States Air Force and falls under the control of Pacific Air Forces. The 673rd Air Base Wing serves as the host unit, managing an infrastructure encompassing 25,899 hectares. The installation mission is to support U.S. interests in the Asia Pacific region and fulfill USINDOPACOM theater staging and throughput requirements.
The installation hosts the headquarters for Alaskan Command, Eleventh Air Force, the 11th Airborne Division, and the Alaskan North American Aerospace Defense Command Region. Units assigned to the base include the 673rd Air Base Wing, the 3rd Wing, the 176th Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard, and the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 11th Airborne Division. The 381st Intelligence Squadron and Joint Task Force-Alaska also operate from the facility. Aircraft types hosted at the base include F-22 Raptors, C-17 Globemaster IIIs, and E-3 AWACS.
Infrastructure includes specialized facilities for the 176th Wing located north of the flightline, which consist of a headquarters building and a pararescue facility. The base also contains medical facilities that provide care to joint service members, dependents, and veterans throughout Alaska.
