Description
Mexico City International Airport, officially known as Benito Juárez International Airport, is located in the Peñón de los Baños neighborhood within the Venustiano Carranza borough, five kilometers east of downtown Mexico City. The site, known as Llanos de Balbuena, has been used for aviation since 1910 and officially opened as Balbuena Military Airport in 1915. It was granted international status in 1943 and was renamed in 1963. The facility is currently owned by the Mexican Navy and operated by Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de México.
The airport hosts Air Force Base No. 19 (B.A.M. 19), situated on the southern portion of the airfield. This base serves as the station for the High Command Special Air Transport Unit (UETAAM) and the Coordination Office of the Presidential Air Transport Unit. The military mission focuses on air transport for the executive branch and high-ranking military officials.
Infrastructure for B.A.M. 19 includes a dedicated apron, administrative buildings, and personnel housing. The complex features multiple hangars, including the Presidential Hangar used for state visits. The base operates a fleet of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, including Boeing 737s, IAI 201s, JetStars, King Airs, SA 330J helicopters, and UH-60 Black Hawks.
In addition to military units, the airport site houses the headquarters of the Mexican Airspace Navigation Services (SENEAM) and the Mexican Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC). It is the location of the Mexico City Area Control Center (ACC), which provides air traffic control services for the Mexico Flight Information Region (FIR), covering the central region of the country. The airport infrastructure also supports extensive cargo and maintenance facilities, including those operated by Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA). General aviation is prohibited at the site, with operations restricted to military, government, and commercial flights.
