Description
Mountain Home Air Force Base is located in Elmore County, Idaho, twelve miles southwest of Mountain Home. Established in 1942 and officially opened on August 7, 1943, the installation initially served as a training base for United States Army Air Forces bomber crews. During World War II, the 470th, 490th, and 494th Bombardment Groups used the site for B-24 Liberator training. The base was placed on inactive status in 1945 and reactivated in 1948.
In 1953, the base was transferred to Strategic Air Command. The 9th Bombardment Wing operated B-29 and B-47 bombers and refueling tankers at the facility until 1966. Between 1962 and 1965, the 569th Strategic Missile Squadron operated three Titan I intercontinental ballistic missile sites in the surrounding area. The base transitioned to Tactical Air Command and became a fighter installation in 1966. The 366th Fighter Wing has been the host unit since 1972.
The base is currently operated by Air Combat Command and hosts the 366th Fighter Wing. Stationed flying units include the 389th and 391st Fighter Squadrons, which operate F-15E Strike Eagles. The 428th Fighter Squadron is a joint unit hosting a detachment of the Republic of Singapore Air Force operating F-15SG aircraft. Other stationed units include the 726th Air Control Squadron and the Idaho Air National Guard 266th Range Squadron.
Infrastructure includes an operational training range spanning 7,412 square miles in southwestern Idaho. The installation provides facilities for aircraft maintenance, medical, and mission support groups. The base hosts squadrons of F-15E Strike Eagle and F-15SG aircraft.
