Description

Hill Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation in Davis County, Utah, situated 30 miles north of Salt Lake City and adjacent to Ogden, Layton, and Clearfield. Established as Hill Field on November 7, 1940, the base was named for Major Ployer Peter Hill, a test pilot who died in 1935. The site was selected following a 1934 survey for an air depot, with construction funding authorized by Congress in 1939. During World War II, the facility functioned as a maintenance and supply depot for aircraft including the B-17, B-24, B-29, and P-47. Following the war, the base was used for the long-term storage of surplus aircraft. The installation was renamed Hill Air Force Base on February 5, 1948.

The base is operated by Air Force Materiel Command. The 75th Air Base Wing is the host unit, providing base operating support for the Ogden Air Logistics Complex (OO-ALC) and mission partner units. The OO-ALC, part of the Air Force Sustainment Center, conducts worldwide engineering and logistics management for the F-35 Lightning II, F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt II, and Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. Operational units stationed at the base include the 388th Fighter Wing and the 419th Fighter Wing.

The base hosts squadrons of F-35A Lightning II aircraft, including the 4th, 34th, 421st, and 466th Fighter Squadrons. Other based units include the 729th Air Control Squadron and the 448th Supply Chain Management Wing. Maintenance and sustainment infrastructure is managed through the 309th Aircraft Maintenance, 309th Commodities Maintenance, 309th Electronics Maintenance, 309th Missile Maintenance, and 309th Software Engineering Groups. Hill Air Force Base schedules operations for the Utah Test and Training Range, a live-fire area in western Utah. Facilities include the 30-acre Hill Aerospace Museum and Hangar 225.
