Oakey Army Aviation Centre (Swartz Barracks)

Oakey Army Aviation Centre, designated by the Department of Defence as Swartz Barracks, is located approximately 3 kilometers from Oakey in Queensland, Australia. The base was constructed in 1943 by the Royal Australian Air Force as RAAF Base Oakey. It initially operated as a training facility for No. 6 Aircraft Depot and an overflow maintenance depot for RAAF Base Amberley. Following World War II, the site stored surplus aircraft. In July 1969, the aerodrome transferred to Army control to serve as the base for the Australian Army Aviation Corps. In 1998, the Army Aviation Training Centre was established at Oakey to command the School of Army Aviation, the helicopter school, and the aircraft maintenance school. In 2021, the Army Aviation Training Centre transferred to the newly established Army Aviation Command.

The facility operates under Australian Army Aviation as a training establishment. Australian Defence Force units stationed at Oakey include the Army Aviation Training Centre, the School of Army Aviation, B Squadron of the 5th Aviation Regiment, No. 44 Wing Air Traffic Control Detachment, a 1MP Military Police detachment, Health Centre Oakey, and the Rotary-wing Aircraft Maintenance School. Under a bilateral training arrangement, the base also hosts the Republic of Singapore Air Force's 127 Squadron.

Aircraft types utilized at the base include Eurocopter EC665 Tigers, Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawks, Airbus H135 T3Hs, Toll Leonardo AW139s, and Republic of Singapore Air Force Boeing CH-47D and CH-47F Chinooks. The military-regulated airfield maintains a civil terminal that functions as an emergency alternate for commercial flights. Two satellite airfields located at Brymaroo and Wyoming support military training operations. Base infrastructure includes accommodation and messing facilities for trainees and permanent staff, alongside physical training facilities, banking branches, and a kiosk. The site also houses the Australian Army Flying Museum, a sub-unit of the Army History Unit, which displays historical aircraft and artifacts related to the aviation history of the Australian Army.
