Description
Toledo Air National Guard Base is located at Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport in Swanton and Monclova townships, 10 miles west of Toledo in Lucas County, Ohio. A consortium of six local companies—Libbey-Owens-Ford, Owens-Illinois, Owens-Corning Fiberglas, Champion Spark Plug, Electric Auto-Lite, and Willys-Overland—acquired the site in 1952 and sold the land to the City of Toledo. The facility was dedicated on October 31, 1954, and commenced operations on January 5, 1955, as a replacement for the former Toledo Municipal Airport. The airport was officially renamed in September 2020 to honor Gene Kranz.
The base is operated by the Ohio Air National Guard and hosts the 180th Fighter Wing, an Air Combat Command-gained unit. The wing maintains combat readiness for worldwide deployment to meet United States Air Force and combatant commander requirements. The unit also provides state support roles for local and state emergencies under the direction of the Governor of Ohio. The base is staffed by Air Reserve Technicians, Active Guard and Reserve personnel, and part-time traditional National Guardsmen.
The installation occupies a 135.4-acre federal enclave leased by the Department of Defense. Infrastructure includes 23 buildings totaling nearly 322,000 square feet, categorized as administrative, industrial, and services facilities. These structures include hangars and aircraft maintenance buildings. The base hosts F-16C Fighting Falcon jet fighters. Military operations also utilize an 81-acre air ramp located on the south side of the airfield.
